Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Power Steering Pump Overhaul
NOTE: A Type-3 power steering pump can be identified by the presence of a remote fluid reservoir. The power steering pump is not serviceable
except for the following items:
1. Power steering pump oil seals except for the pump shaft seal.
2. Power steering pump reservoirs and related components.
3. Power steering pump reservoir filler cap/dipstick.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove pump, pump mounting brackets and pump pulley.

2. Remove pump end plate retaining ring as follows:
a. Position a socket (1) on the pump shaft and end plate.
b. Mount pump and sockets in a vise as shown.
c. Tighten fixture slightly to compress spring under end plate.
WARNING: End plate is under spring pressure. Use caution when removing retaining ring to avoid personal injury.
d. Insert a punch (2), into access hole in pump and push ring outward.
e. Remove retaining ring (3), with a screwdriver, release vise jaws and remove pump and sockets from vise.

3. Place pump into vise with wood blocks between shaft end of pump housing and vise jaws.
4. Remove end plate by gently rocking back and forth, or tapping with a soft mallet.
