Six-Step Troubleshooting Procedure
The six-step diagnostic procedure listed below allows a logical process through which problems in any of the vehicle's systems may be diagnosed.
1. Verify the Complaint.
2. Determine Related Symptoms.
3. Analyze the Symptoms.
4. Isolate the Trouble.
5. Correct the Trouble.
6. Check for Proper Operation.
Step One: Verify the Complaint

Does the problem really exist?

Is it an intermittent or constant problem?

Obtain as much information as possible from the customer.

Duplicate the problem conditions.
Step Two: Determine Related Symptoms

Conduct operational checks on all circuits connected to problem circuit.

The problem must lie between the last negative and first positive symptom found during testing.
Step Three: Analyze the Symptoms

Use the wiring diagrams.
^
Isolate the problem area.
^
Develop a plan.
^
Determine what checks to make and where to make them.
^
Use a logical procedure.
Step Four: Isolate the Trouble

Use the wiring diagrams.
^
Use the proper test equipment.
^
Use your plan.
^
Find the problem.
Step Five: Correct the Trouble

Repair or the replace faulty component(s).
Step Six: Check for Proper Operation

Be certain that the vehicle works properly before returning it to the customer.
