Since September of 1980, the crankshaft rear main bearing oil seal surface has not been knurled on 318 engines. As a result, aftermarket "rope type" rear
main bearing oil seals must not be used for replacement or an oil leak may result.
Parts Supply services only Rear Main Bearing Oil Seal Package PN 4240044 which must be used in all 1980 and later 318 engines. This package is also
recommended for use in engines built prior to 1980 with a knurled crankshaft.
When installing the rear main bearing oil seal upper half, use a seal protector to prevent peeling the rubber from the back side of the seal on the sharp
edge of the block.
