SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Customer concern of "rattling" noise from transmission area with clutch pedal out, transmission in neutral, and engine at curb idle.
DIAGNOSIS/REPAIR
The engine and transmission should be at their normal operating temperatures. With the engine idling, transmission in neutral, and the clutch pedal out,
listen for gear rattle. Raise the engine idle speed slightly to see if the noise disappears. If the noise disappears, then attach a tachometer to the engine and
check the curb idle speed. Adjust the idle speed to the recommended idle speed (i.e. if recommended curb idle speed is 600 + or - 100 rpm, and actual
idle speed is 525 rpm, then adjust the idle speed to 600 rpm). As little as 50 rpm can make a big difference in the gear rattle sound.
CAUTION: NEVER ADJUST THE IDLE SPEED ABOVE THE RECOMMENDED RPM RANGE TO REDUCE GEAR RATTLE.
If the customer is complaining of neutral gear rattle only when the steering gear is placed in a full turn against the stops (vehicles equipped with power
steering), or during air conditioning clutch engagement or any other condition that lowers the engine idle speed below the normal idle speed, the noise is
considered normal and no attempts should be made to repair it. Neutral gear rattle is not detrimental to vehicle components or operation.
