Steering Shaft: Service and Repair

CAUTION:  After the steering intermediate shaft is removed at either the steering gear or steering column be sure the steering column shaft is not
rotated. If the steering column shaft is allowed to rotate freely damage to the clockspring will occur.

REMOVE 

1. Raise vehicle on jackstands or centered on a hoist.

2. Install Remover, Roll Pin, Special Tool 6831A, or equivalent through center of roll pin on intermediate steering shaft coupler at steering gear.

3. Remove roll pin from intermediate steering shaft coupler using the following procedure. Using a wrench, hold threaded bolt on Remover, Roll Pin,

Special Tool 6831A, or equivalent from rotating. Using a second wrench, tighten nut against sleeve of special tool. This will pull the roll pin out of
the coupler on the intermediate steering shaft.

4. Remove intermediate steering shaft from steering gear by sliding it off input shaft.

5. Remove intermediate steering shaft flex joint from steering column shaft. Flex joint is removed using following procedure. Remove bolt from flex

joint on intermediate steering shaft. Then slide flex joint off the end of the steering column shaft.

6. Remove intermediate steering shaft from vehicle.
