SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Subject model vehicles may exhibit hard starting cold and hot, rough idle, sags and hesitation on acceleration, and poor wide open throttle performance.
DIAGNOSIS
The driveability conditions outlined above may be the result of fuel system corrosion and/or contamination with rust, which can be determined by
inspecting fuel system components (i.e. fuel filter, intank filter sock, taking fuel sample, etc.).
If contamination is found in fuel system components perform the following procedure:
^
Using non-volatile mineral spirits (MS-552 or equivalent), flush all fuel supply and return lines and the fuel pump. This can best be done after
removing fuel tank and in-line filter from vehicle.
^
A hand held liquid pump may be used to flush the fuel lines and fuel pump or
^
Draw mineral spirits from tank end of chassis fuel line, crank engine for 30 seconds using starter, and allow mineral spirits to flow out of fuel filter
end of carburetor supply tube.
^
Catch used spirits and do not reuse. Fuel return line will still have to be cleaned by hand.
^
Blow all lines and fuel pump dry using shop air (not over 50 PSI).
The following components must be replaced:
^
Fuel tank assembly
^
Fuel level sending unit and filter sock assembly
^
In-line fuel filter
Add fresh clean fuel, start engine and check for leaks.
