Stabilizer Bar: Service and Repair

Some 1984 models may experience a low pitched squeak at the sway bar bushings and mounting cushions in ambient temperatures below 32°F. This
noise will occur when the vehicle is bounced up and down, such as when hitting dips, bumps, etc. This problem can be corrected as follows:
1. Remove sway bar as described below.
2. Remove and discard sway bar cushions.
3. Install new cushions (part No. 4322677, color coded beige), without using any type of lubricant.
4. Remove outer bushings using a hammer or other suitable tool. Do not cut bushings.
5. Clean inner diameter of bushing and bushing mating surface on sway bar.
6. Apply suitable sealant to inner surface of bushing and bushing mating surface on sway bar.
7. Install bushings onto sway bar until approximately 1/2 inch of bar protrudes at each end.
8. Install sway bar as described below.

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove nuts, bolts and retainers at the control armsshown,
3. Remove crossmember clamp attaching bolts, then the crossmember clamps.
4. Remove sway bar from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

1. Position crossmember bushings on sway bar with curved surface up and split to front of vehicle.
2. Position bar assembly onto crossmember, then install clamps and attaching boltsshown,
3. Position retainers at control arms, then install bolts and attaching nuts.
4. Raise lower control arm to correct position, then torque attaching bolts to 25 ft. lbs.
