SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Inoperative speedometer/odometer system.

DIAGNOSIS

When servicing the system, first determine if the cable is seized in the housing. To check for this condition, disconnect the speedometer cable from the
distance sensor and turn the core wire. If the core wire cannot be rotated, the cable is seized and must be replaced with a new high temperature cable
assembly.

USE THIS CABLE ASSEMBLY ONLY. DO NOT USE CABLES WITH OTHER PART NUMBERS.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1987 Vehicles Only

If the speedometer cable has seized in the housing the distance sensor probably has been sheared off and it must be replaced along with the new cable
assembly.

1988 Vehicles Only

Inspect the distance sensor for speedometer cable debris. Check the distance sensor to ensure that the drive mechanism has not sheared off. The
speedometer drive pinion must be inspected for damaged teeth, and for damage in the distance sensor drive area. If any damage is evident, replace the 
gear.
When installing the new cable assembly, PN 4439100, make sure that it is routed as recommended in the service manual. Be sure to reattach the cable to
the cowl using the existing cable clip, PN 6015928. This clip must keep the cable away from the exhaust system, but must be loose enough to allow cable
movement to prevent binding.
