SUBJECT:
Poor Air Conditioner Performance - A/C Does Not Cool Or White Flakes Blowing From A/C Ducts

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Two possible conditions may require replacement of the A/C evaporator.
CONDITION 1:
The vehicle blows fine white flakes from the instrument panel vents when the climate control fan is turned on. The flakes are residue of the sodium
silicate used to coat the A/C evaporator during the manufacturing process. Although sodium silicate is not an allergy producing material, and is not
linked to any long term health effects, it may cause minor irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and any other skin area that is moist. Vehicles exhibiting this
condition should have the evaporator replaced as outlined in the Repair Procedure section of this bulletin.
CONDITION 2:
Vehicles may exhibit poor A/C cooling, or normal cooling that tapers off to no cooling after a few minutes of operation. This condition may be caused
by an internal leak in the evaporator which allows refrigerant to flow from the inlet to the outlet without circulating through the entire evaporator.
DIAGNOSIS:
NOTE:
IN ORDER TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE, THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE MUST BE 65OF (18~C) OR GREATER.
1.
Install the A/C manifold gauge set as outlined on page 24-23 of the 1992 Front Wheel Drive/All Wheel Drive Van Wagon Service Manual,
Publication Number 81-370-2105.
2.
Place a dial thermometer in the left center panel outlet. Record the temperature.
3.
Start the vehicle and turn the A/C ON. Set the controls to full cool, recirculate position (max A/C), and high blower.
4.
Allow the A/C system to run for 10 minutes. While the system is running, check for the following symptoms:
A.
The discharge air temperature will drop approximately 20~F (11~C) below ambient within the first two minutes of operation. (This
specification is for the variable displacement compressor, a fixed displacement compressor may drop less than 20~F (11~C).) Discharge
temperatures will then start to raise to near ambient.
B.
Discharge (High Side) pressure is low, approximately 150-225 PSI, and suction (Low Side) pressure is low, approximately 25 PSI.
C.
While the interior discharge temperature will be close to ambient, the suction line at the evaporator will be cold/cool and the condenser
outline will be warm/hot to the touch. THIS IS IMPORTANT, AS OTHER CONDITIONS THAT ALSO CAUSE SYMPTOMS A
AND B WILL NOT EXHIBIT A COOL/COLD SUCTION LINE.
5.
If symptoms A, B, and C are ALL present, the evaporator has an internal leak and must be replaced as outlined below.
