Diesel MFI Pump: Service and Repair

Altitude Fuel Limiter (AFL), Replace

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly and air crossover, then install suitable screened covers on manifold.
3. Disconnect AFL electrical wiring harness from engine wiring harness.
4. Remove pump cover.
5. Remove sufficient amount of fuel so fuel level is below AFL opening.
6. Disconnect AFL shaft from linkage hook.
7. Loosen AFL lock nut while holding AFL assembly.
8. Mark AFL to facilitate assembly, then remove AFL, noting number of turns required for removal.
9. Remove O-ring and lock nut.

10. Reverse procedure to install, threading AFL in the same number of turns required for removal, and align mark made during disassembly. Torque

lock nut to 85 inch lbs. while holding AFL in position.

Camshaft & Injection Pump Drive & Driven Gears Replace

1. Remove engine assembly as previously outlined.
2. Remove intake manifold and gasket.
3. Remove oil pump drive assembly.
4. Remove front cover, then rotate crankshaft so that timing marks are in alignment.
5. Remove all rocker arms, pivots, push rods, and lifters. Note valve train component location for proper location upon installation.
6. Remove bolt securing camshaft sprocket, then remove both cam and crank sprocket. If crank sprocket is tight on shaft, remove with a suitable

puller.

7. Remove bolts retaining front camshaft bearing retainer, then remove retainer.
8. Remove cam sprocket key.
9. Remove injection pump drive gear.

10. Remove intake manifold, intermediate pump adapter and pump adapter. Remove snap ring, selective washer, driven gear and spring, Fig. 31.
11. Install a long bolt into camshaft to act as a handle and carefully slide camshaft out of block. Do not force the camshaft out of the block. Damage

to the bearings and or the camshaft can result. If the bearings are to be replaced, it will be necessary to remove the oil pan before
removing the bearings.

12. Reverse procedure to install. Check injection pump driven gear end play. If end play is not .002-.006 inch, replace selective washer, Fig. 31.

Selective washers are available from .080 to .115 inch in increments of .003 inch.

End Plate Access Plug or Stop Plug Washer, Replace

1. Remove air cleaner and install cover J-26996-1 or equivalent.
2. Clean any dirt from area.
3. Remove stop plug and/or end plate plug and discard washers.
4. Reverse procedure to install. Torque stop plug to 80 inch lbs. and end plate to 43 ft. lbs.
