On 1985 models and some 1986 models, flat type lifters are used, Fig. 11. These valve lifters can be removed after removal of rocker arms, push rods
and intake manifold. On all other models, roller type hydraulic valve lifters are used, Fig. 12. To remove lifters on these models, the retainer and support
plates must also be removed, Fig. 13. Pliers with taped jaws can be used to remove lifters that are stuck due to carbon varnish etc. Disassemble only one
lifter at a time, Fig. 11 and 12, keeping components for each lifter separate. Replace lifters as an assembly if housing plunger or valve seat is damaged or
excessively worn.
