POWER STEERING PUMP NOISE AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORT

Affected:
1987-88 BONNEVILLE
In the interest of reducing the level of power steering noise on Bonneville, Pontiac has released new power steering pumps. The new pump assemblies
have a modified reservoir, which is released in a new service kit. The new service kit may be used on customers vehicles that experience power steering
fluid aeration during turning maneuvers. This condition is first identified as an increase in pump noise during turning maneuvers, typically on aggressive
or long duration turns. This service kit and flow valve are to be used ONLY after it has been determined that no power steering system leaks exist, and
that the power steering system has been purged of all air, as described:
1.
Raise the front of vehicle until the front wheels are off the ground.
2.
Make sure power steering reservoir is filled with power steering fluid to the proper level.
3.
With the engine turned off (not running), slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
4.
Have an observer watch the fluid in the reservoir as the steering wheel is being turned. Continue turning steering wheel until air bubbles are no
longer seen rising from the fluid.
