Air Bag: Service and Repair
Passenger's Inflator Module
WARNING:he diagnostic energy reserve module or sensing and diagnostic module (DERM/SDM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air
bag deployment for up to two minutes after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SIR system during
this period may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.
1. Disarm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming
2. On models with center console, remove console as follows:
a. Remove transaxle control lever handle.
b. Remove ashtray, then the screws under the ashtray.
c. Carefully pry up console center trim plate, then rotate trim plate back.
d. Remove trans lever and console bracket bolts.
e. Open armrest bin lid and remove lower bin trim plate by lifting tab.
f.
Remove lower console to floor stud nuts, then the front lower console vent clip.
g. Disconnect electrical connectors and remove lower console.
3. On all models, remove instrument panel cluster trim plate.
4. Remove steering column filler panel from under steering column.
5. Remove steering column support bracket to instrument panel attaching bolts and lower steering column.
6. Remove glove compartment insert retaining screws, then the insert.
7. Carefully pry defroster grill out of instrument panel.
8. Remove instrument panel attaching screws through defroster grill opening.
9. Remove instrument panel to dash panel attaching bolts.
10. Remove instrument panel to instrument panel support bracket attaching bolts.
11. Remove steering column support bracket bolts.
12. Disconnect instrument panel electrical connectors, including antenna coax.
13. Disconnect aspirator hose, then remove instrument panel.
14. Remove inflator module attaching bolts, then the inflator module from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. After completing installation, rearm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
b. Turn ignition switch to On position and verify that the Air Bag or SIR warning lamp flashes seven to nine times and then turns off. If lamp
does not respond as specified, refer to System Diagnosis.
