Spark Plug: Service and Repair

Spark Plug Torque

WARNING:  If you smoke while handling coated spark plugs, wear gloves to prevent transfer of the coating to cigarettes and subsequent
burning of the coating. Wash hands after installing spark plugs.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Be sure ignition switch is in "OFF" or "LOCK" position.
2. Spark plug wire harness from spark plugs.

TIP:  Note positions of wires before removing them from the vehicle.

NOTE:  Clean dirt and debris from spark plug recess areas.

3. Spark plugs from cylinder heads.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

CAUTION:  Be sure spark plugs thread smoothly into cylinder heads and are fully seated. Cross-threading or failing to fully seat spark plugs can
cause overheating of spark plugs, exhaust blow-by, or thread damage. Follow recommended torque specifications carefully. Over or
under-tightening can also cause severe damage to cylinder heads or spark plugs.

NOTE:  Check spark plug gap using a wire type gauge before installing. If spark plug gaps are not adjusted correctly, engine idle quality may be
seriously affected. A wire type gauge must be used (as opposed to a flat feeler type gauge) to insure an accurate reading. 

1. Gap plugs to 1.52 mm (0.60 inch).
2. Spark plugs to cylinder heads. Tighten Spark plugs to 15 Nm (11 ft lb).
3. Spark plug wire harness assemblies, routed properly as noted during removal.
