Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair

REAR DRIVE AXLE

    The axle type identification marks for will be stamped on right rear axle tube, on forward side.

TYPE ``B & O'' (EXC. 71/2 inch)

1.

To remove, take off wheels and brake drums.

2.

Remove nuts holding retainer plates and brake backing plates. Pull retainers clear of bolts and reinstall two lower nuts finger tight to hold backing
plate in position.

3.

Use a slide hammer-type puller to remove axle shaft, Fig. 3.

Axle Shaft Bearing

1.

Press axle shaft bearing off shaft.

2.

Press new bearing against shoulder on shaft. Outer retainer plate which retains bearing in housing must be on axle shaft before bearing is
installed. A new outer retainer gasket can be installed after bearing. Use care not to wedge outer retainer between bearing and shoulder
of shaft. Do not press bearing and inner retainer on in one operation.

Press new inner retainer ring against bearing.Axle Shaft Seal

1.

Insert suitable tongs behind seal and pull straight out to remove seal.

2.

Apply sealer to outside diameter of new seal.

3.

Position seal over a suitable installer and drive straight into axle housing until tool bottoms on bearing shoulder in housing.Axle Shaft, Install

1.

Apply a coat of wheel bearing grease in bearing recess of housing. Also lightly lubricate the axle shaft with rear axle lube from the sealing surface
to about 6 inch inboard.

2.

Install new axle housing-to-brake backing plate gasket.

3.

Install brake assembly with backing plate in proper position.

4.

With a new outer retainer gasket in proper position, insert axle shaft until splines engage differential. Do not allow shaft to drag on seal.

5.

Drive axle shaft into position.

6.

Place new outer retainer gasket and retainer over studs and install nuts.

7.

Install brake drums and wheels. TYPE ``C,'' ``G,'' ``K,'' ``O'' (71/2 inch) & ``P'' AXLE

1.

Raise and support car leaving the rear wheels and differential suspended.

2.

Remove rear wheels and brake drums.

3.

Remove differential cover and drain lubricant.

4.

Remove pinion shaft lock bolt and pinion shaft.

5.

Push axle shaft inward to permit removal of ``C'' locks then remove axle shaft.

6.

Install axle shaft bearing and seal remover and remove the bearing and seal.
