Horn Switch: Service and Repair

MODELS LESS SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Remove steering wheel shroud screws on underside of steering wheel.

3.

Remove steering wheel shroud and horn contact lead assembly from the steering wheel.

4.

Remove snap ring and steering wheel nut.

5.

Using steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel. Note position of steering wheel to shaft.

6.

Reverse procedure to install.

MODELS WITH SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SYSTEM

Removal

1.

With steering wheel in straight ahead position, place ignition switch in Lock position.

2.

Remove Airbag (SIR) fuse from fuse panel.

3.

Remove lower left hand trim panel, then remove connector position assurance and disconnect yellow two way Supplemental Inflatable Restraint
connector at base of steering column.

4.

Disconnect battery ground cable and tape cable end.

5.

Remove inflator module attaching screws from rear of steering wheel.

6.

Lift inflator module from steering wheel, then disconnect electrical connectors from inflator module.

7.

Remove steering wheel retaining nut.

8.

Using puller J-1859-03 or equivalent, pull steering wheel from steering shaft.

9.

Disconnect horn electrical connect and remove steering wheel.

Installation

1.

Connect horn electrical connector.

2.

Position steering wheel spline alignment marks to alignment marks of steering shaft splines, then install steering wheel.

3.

Install steering wheel retaining nut and torque to 30 ft. lbs.

4.

Connect SIR coil electrical connector to inflator module, then install connector position assurance.

5.

Position inflator module to steering wheel, then install new mounting screws. Torque mounting screws to 25 inch lbs.

6.

Ensure ignition switch is in Lock position.

7.

Connect yellow SIR two way electrical connector and install connector position assurance at base of steering column.

8.

Install lower left hand trim panel.

9.

Install Airbag (SIR) fuse into fuse panel.

10.

Connect battery ground cable.

11.

Place ignition switch in Run position and note operation of inflatable Restraint warning lamp. Warning lamp should flash 7 to 9 times and then
turn off.
