Relay rod height should be equal (plus or minus .039 inch) from side to side. If relay rod height is not within specifications, steering and handling
problem could be encountered. Relay rod height is adjusted at the idler arm to frame attachment.
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Using a suitable wire brush, clean both flats of relay rod.
3.
Position tool J33093 or equivalent on flat of relay rod at Pitman arm end.
4.
Position a socket on pivot bolt of left hand lower control arm.
5.
Measure distance between bottom socket and tool and note, Fig. 5.
6.
Loosen idler arm to frame nuts just enough to allow idler arm to slide upward and downward.
7.
Position tool J33093 or equivalent on flat of relay rod at idler arm end.
8.
Position a socket on pivot bolt of right hand lower control arm.
9.
Measure distance between bottom socket and tool and note, Fig. 5.
10.
Both reading should be with in .039 inch of each other. If not, adjust position of idle arm at frame until readings are within limits.
11.
Torque idler arm to frame nuts to 52 ft. lbs., then remove tool and socket and lower vehicle.
12.
Check and adjust toe as necessary.
