Ball Joint: Service and Repair
Upper

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
2. Place a floor jack under shock absorber mounting location on lower control. Jack must remain in place during ball joint replacement to hold

spring and lower control arm in position.

3. Loosen ball joint from steering knuckle, then remove cotter pin and nut.
4. Support steering knuckle with floor stands, then disconnect ball joint from upper control arm using ball joint/tie rod separator J 39549.
5. With upper control arm in raised position, drill out four rivets approximately 1/4 inch deep using a 1/8 inch drill bit.
6. Drill off rivet heads using a 1/2 inch drill bit, then punch out rivets using a small punch and remove ball joint.
7. Position new ball joint and install bolts and nuts supplied with new ball joint.
8. Remove support from steering knuckle, then connect ball joint to steering knuckle.
9. Tighten nut enough to align slot with stud hole, then tighten nut to specifications and install cotter pin.
