Crankshafts used in 1987-88 2.3L Quad-4 engines are different from the crankshafts used in 1989-1994 2.3L Quad-4 engines. These crankshafts are not
interchangeable.
The 1987 and 1988 crankshafts have a reluctor wheel with 0° of advance. The 1989 through 1994 crankshafts have a reluctor wheel with 15° of advance.
A 15° advance crankshaft installed in a vehicle REQUIRING a 0° crankshaft will exhibit an idle fluctuation or surge condition. A 0° crankshaft installed
in a vehicle REQUIRING a 15° advance crankshaft will exhibit a lack of power. If the crankshaft was ever replaced with the incorrect one, the above
information could assist in diagnosing the vehicle.
