22. Camshaft oil seal, from camshaft and discard seal. This seal must be replaced any time the housing and cover are separated.
NOTE: Do not reuse this seal.
23. Valve lifters. Keep lifters in order so they can be reinstalled in the same location.
To minimize lifter bleed down:
-
Store lifters upside down (opposite installed position) on a level surface and
-
Store the lifters submerged in clean engine oil.
NOTE: These lifters are not serviceable. If faulty, they must be replaced.
24. Cam housing and gasket.
Inspect
-
Make sure the alignment dowel pins are In the cylinder head prior to installing the camshaft housing.
Inspect Camshaft
-
Sprocket.
-
Keyway and threads.
Inspect Bearing surfaces and lobes for:
-
Wear
-
Galling
-
Gouges
-
Overheating (Discoloration)
NOTE: Do not attempt to repair the camshaft, replace it if damaged. If a new camshaft is installed, all valve lifters actuated by that camshaft must
also be replaced.
Measure bearing journal diameter with a micrometer. If out of specification, replace the camshaft.
