Timing Chain Idler Gear: Service and Repair
Removal
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
NOTE: Any time the timing chain idler sprocket is pressed out of the bearing, the bearing must be replaced. The bearing is damaged during the
pressing operation.
1. Timing chain housing. Refer to Timing Cover.
Timing Chain Idler Assembly
2. Snap ring (47C).
3. Follow directions stamped into tool and install J 36998-4 or equivalent onto the front side of the chain housing. Index the three (3) alignment
dowel pins to the front cover retaining bolt holes.
Removing Timing Chain Idler Sprocket
4. Press sprocket (47A) out of the bearing (47B) using J 36998-2 or equivalent.
5. Move J 36998-4 to the rear of the chain housing and index over the coolant pump studs.
6. Install J 36998-1 onto J 36998-2 or equivalents.
