Flex Plate: Service and Repair
Flywheel Removal

TOOL REQUIRED

J 36660 Torque Angle Meter

^

J 38122 Harmonic Balancer Holder

NOTE:  It may be necessary to, remove the chamfer from the edge of an 18 mm socket to obtain a full socket engagement on the thin headed flex plate
bolts. The flex plate can not be rotated to balance the flex plate to the engine because it can only be installed on the vehicle one way.

REMOVAL  

1. Remove the transmission assembly. 
2. Remove the right splash shield. 

NOTE:  Mark the relationship of the clutch cover assembly to the flex plate in order to assure proper balance during reassembly.

3. Remove the flex plate attaching bolt while using harmonic balancer holder to prevent crankshaft rotation.
4. Remove the flex plate and retainer.
5. The thread adhesive must be thoroughly removed from the flex plate.

INSTALLATION 

1. Install the new bolts or apply adhesive/Sealant compound GM P/N 123454493 or equivalent to all flex plate to crankshaft bolts that are being

re-used. 

2. Carefully follow the instructions included with the thread locking compound to ensure proper bolt retention.
3. Install the flex plate and the attaching bolts.
4. While holding the crankshaft balancer with harmonic balancer holder, tighten the bolts evenly to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.), then rotate the bolts 45

degrees using a torque angle meter.

5. Install the right splash shield. 
6. Install the transmission assembly.
