Bulletin No.: 73-50-28
Date: October, 1997
Subject:
Pedal Does not Fully Return, Cruise Control Inoperative, Brakes Drag/Heat Up, Early Pad Wear Out (Check/Adjust Switches, Reposition/Trim Sound
Insulator)
Model:
1997 Pontiac Grand Prix
Condition
Some owners may comment on one or more of the following conditions:
1.
Brake pedal does not fully return.
2.
Cruise control does not engage or disengages.
3.
Brakes drag or heat up.
4.
Brakes seem to self-apply as vehicle is driven.
5.
Early brake pad wear out.
Cause
The above conditions may be caused by one of the following:
1.
Misadjusted brake and/or cruise control switches.
2.
Insufficient clearance between sound insulator and brake pedal arm.
Correction
1.
Check/adjust brake and cruise control switches. Pull up firmly on the brake pedal. If clicks are heard from the switches sliding in the retainers, the
brake switches were probably out of adjustment.
Important:
After making this adjustment, always check to make sure the switches are still held securely in the retainers. Also, check for proper operation
of the CHMSL (center high mounted stop lamp) and the BTSI (brake transmission shift interlock.)
2.
If the sound insulator is interfering with the brake pedal, reposition as far back as possible. When installing the sound insulator, be sure it is
positioned on the rear locating stud. If does not provide sufficient clearance, trim the sound insulator in the area of the brake pedal until you have
approximately 12 mm (0.5 in.) clearance.
3.
If the brakes have been dragging, check related brake parts for heat damage. Check seals on calipers, wheel cylinders, and bearings. Also check
brake linings and shoes for cracks and/or crumbling on the surface. Discoloration of the rotors and/or drums does not damage them. Check the
braking surfaces for cracks.
