Condition
Some customers may comment that the cruise control drops out, or releases by itself, while driving with the windshield wipers on.
Cause
The cruise control module and the wipers share a common ground. Feedback from the wiper circuit can interfere with the cruise module and allow the
cruise to release. The wiring was corrected in production for the 1998 model year by using separate ground wires. However, feedback can still be present
in the module. The module was changed in production in late March of 1998.
Correction
For both 1997 and 1998 model years, replace the cruise control module with new Part Number 25173345, following the instructions in the Service
Manual.
For 1997 models only, install a separate ground wire for the cruise control module and rewire circuit 389.
Use the following procedure to install the revised wiring:
1.
Remove the left hand fender brace and the air cleaner duct. Locate the cruise control module, which is mounted on the left shock tower (shown in
Figure 11 on Page 8A-201-7 of the Service Manual). Remove the connector.
2.
Remove Terminals "E" and "K" from the module connector. Cut off the old terminals and tape the wires back to the harness.
3.
Use a new 24 inch (600 mm) length of black 20 gauge (0.5 mm) wire. Use a new terminal, P/N 12048074, at one end, and a ring terminal at the
other. Attach the ring terminal to the transaxle ground stud and install the new terminal into cavity "E".
4.
Use a new 36 inch (900 mm) length of green 20 gauge (0.5 mm) wire and add a new terminal, P/N 12048074, at one end. Install the terminal into
cavity "K". Splice the other end of the wire into the wire from PCM connector C1, Terminal 13, about 3 inches (75 mm) back from the connector.
The PCM is located inside the air cleaner housing and is shown on Page 8A-201-9 of the Service Manual.
5.
Tape the new wire in place to prevent any pinch points.
