Fig. 19 Ignition Coil & Module Assembly Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then disconnect ignition coil and module electrical connectors.
2. Remove four bolts attaching ignition coil and module assembly to camshaft housings, then pull upward on assembly to remove, Fig. 18. If

connectors are stuck to spark plugs, use tool no. J-36011, or equivalent, to remove.

3. Disconnect oil pressure switch electrical connector.
4. Remove transaxle dipstick and tube assembly from camshaft cover and position aside.
5. Remove exhaust camshaft cover and gasket.
6. Disconnect timing chain housing as follows:

a. Remove coolant recovery tank, then serpentine drive belt.
b. Raise and support vehicle, then remove right front wheel and tire assembly.
c. Remove right lower splash shield, then balancer bolt using tool No. J-37086, or equivalent, to prevent crankshaft rotation when loosening bolt.
d. Remove balancer using tool No. J-24420-B, or equivalent, then front cover lower bolts and nut.
e. Lower vehicle, then remove water pump assembly to timing chain housing nuts. If not previously removed.
f.

Remove front cover upper bolts and nuts, then front cover.

g. Remove timing chain as described under Timing Chain. Refer to Timing Components.
h. Remove chain housing to belt tensioner bracket brace.
i.

Remove timing chain housing to block lower fasteners, then four oil pan to front cover bolts.

Remove oil/air separator hose from chain housing.

Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and washers while holding sprockets with tool No. J-36013, or equivalent, camshaft sprocket
wrench.

l.

Remove camshaft sprockets. Because sprockets are identical and interchangeable, no marking is necessary.

m. Remove eight chain housing to camshaft housing bolts, then timing chain housing and gaskets.
