Spark Plug: Service and Repair

Ignition System Components

The recommended change interval for the platium tip spark plugs used in this engine is 100,000 miles. If a plug is removed from the engine and there is
no malfunction associated with the plug, reinstall the old plug in the engine.

CAUTION:  To avoid engine damage, do not remove spark plugs when engine is warm. Use care when removing spark plug wire boots from spark
plugs. Twist the boot 1/2 turns while removing, and pull on the boot only to remove the wire.

REQUIRED TOOL

J 36011 spark plug connector assembly removal tool.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable at battery.
2. Ignition Control Module (ICM) assembly 4 bolts and connector.
3. Remove by pulling straight up on housing.
4. Use tool J 36011 to remove connector assembly(s) if stuck to spark plugs.

Use tool by first twisting then pulling up on the connector assembly.

5. Remove debris from area around spark plugs.
6. Spark plugs.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Adjust spark plug gap to 1.5 mm (0.060 in.) using a spark plug feeler gauge.
2. Install new plugs and tighten.

Tighten
Plug to 18 Nm (13 lb. ft.)

3. Reinstall onto the IDI any spark plug boot connector assembly that stuck to a spark plug.
4. Locate the IDI assembly over spark plugs and push straight down.
5. Any loose lubrication that is present on the IDI assembly to cam housing bolts.
6. Apply threadlocker, GM part no. 1052080 or equivalent onto the IDI assembly to cam housing bolts.
