Malfunction Indicator Lamp: Description and Operation

The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is located in the instrument panel cluster. The MIL will display as either "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" or one
of the following symbols when commanded ON:
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE
The powertrain control module (PCM) is the control center of the engine controls system. The PCM constantly looks at the information from various
sensors, and controls the systems that affect emissions or engine performance. The PCM also performs the diagnostic function of the system. The
PCM can recognize operational problems, alert the driver through the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), and store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or
DTCs which identify the problem areas in order to aid the technician in making repairs.
SERVICE VEHICLE SOON
The IPC illuminates the service vehicle soon indicator when any of the following occur:

The IPC part number does not match the programmed model configuration number.

The BCM detects a PASSLOCK fault. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.

The BCM stores specific lighting and horn codes. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.
*
The BCM detects a passive trunk release fault. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the BCM requesting illumination.
*
The EBCM detects a traction control system failure. The IPC receives a class 2 message from the EBCM requesting illumination.
*
The IPC performs the displays test at the start of each ignition cycle. The indicator illuminates for approximately 3 seconds.
