Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair
1.
Raise vehicle on a hoist and remove wheel and tire assembly and brake drum.
2.
Drain lubricant from axle by removing carrier cover.
3.
Unscrew pinion shaft lock screw and remove pinion shaft.
4.
Push flanged end of axle shaft toward center of car and remove ``C'' lock from button end of shaft.
5.
Remove axle shaft from housing being careful not to damage seal.
OIL SEAL AND/OR BEARING REPLACEMENT
1.
If replacing seal only, remove the seal by using the button end of axle shaft. Insert the button end of shaft behind the steel case of the seal and pry
seal out of bore being careful not to damage housing.
2.
If replacing bearings, insert tool J-25593 into bore so tool head grasps behind bearing. Slide washer against seal, or bearing, and turn nut against
washer. Attach slide hammer J-2619 and remove bearing.
3.
Lubricate bearing with rear axle lubricant, then install bearing into housing bore with tool J-25594 and slide hammer J-8092. Make sure tool
contacts end of axle housing to insure proper bearing depth.
4.
Pack cavity between seal lips with a high melting point wheel bearing lubricant. Position seal on tool J-22922 and position seal in axle housing
bore, tap seal in bore until flush with end of axle housing.
