Voltage Gauge - Low Voltage Reading/Run Down Battery
File In Section: 8 - Chassis/Body Electrical
Bulletin No.: 43-81-41
Date: December, 1994
Subject:
Gradual Loss of Power/Low Voltage Reading (Replace Fusible Link with Larger Gauge)
Models:
1993-95 Chevrolet Lumina Minivan
1993-95 Oldsmobile Silhouette
1993-95 Pontiac Trans Sport with 3.8L engine (VIN L - RPO L27)
Condition
The customer may comment that the voltage reading on the gauge (if equipped) is lower than normal. If the low voltage is not noticed for some time, the
comment may become poor driveability or stalling. This will eventually lead to a run-down battery and complete loss of power. The generator warning
light or "Check Gauges" warning light WILL NOT be on.
Cause
The fusible link from the generator to the starter solenoid may be blown. This causes the vehicle to run on battery power only, which will lead to the
above conditions.
The present wiring design uses a 2 mm (14 gauge) fusible link, which may be inadequate under certain conditions. This is more likely to occur with the
140 amp generator, with the battery in a low state of charge, or with the added loads of customer installed accessories. A larger fusible link was installed
in production after approximately October 1, 1994. The wiring is shown on page 8A-10-2 of the 1995 U Van Service Manual.
Correction
Replace the fusible link with 3 mm (12 gauge) fusible
link wire. This material is available from GMSPO in
50 foot rolls, P/N 6293923.
