Caution: Do not place your fingers In front of the piston in order to catch or protect the piston while applying compressed air. This could
result in serious injury.
Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.
Notice: Use just enough air pressure to ease the piston out of the bore. You can damage a blown-out piston even with the padding.
4. Insert a shop cloth (2) into the caliper (1) in order to catch the piston.
5. Apply compressed air to the caliper brake hose connector hole in order to remove the piston from the caliper.
6. Use a flat-bladed tool in order to remove the piston seal (2).
7. Remove the bleeder valve cap (4).
8. Remove the bleeder valve (5).
9. Remove the sliding pins (2,9).
10. Remove the boots (3,6,9).
Important: DO NOT use abrasives in order to clear the caliper components.
11. Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner:

The caliper slide pins
^
The boots
^
The piston
^
The caliper housing
12. Dry the components using Unlubricated, compressed air.
13. Blow out all the passages in the caliper housing and the bleeder valve.
Inspection Procedure
1. Inspect the slide pin bores of the caliper (10) for corrosion and wear. Replace the caliper if the slide pin bores are damaged.
2. Inspect the caliper piston bore for cracks, scoring, pitting, or corrosion. Replace the caliper if the bore is damaged.
3. Inspect the following components for damage, wear or corrosion:

The caliper housing
^
The piston (13)
^
The piston seal (14)
^
The piston boot (12)
^
The caliper set ring (11)
4. Replace the components if damage, wear or corrosion is evident.
Assembly Procedure
1. Lubricate the sliding pins (2,9) and the boots (3,6,7) with wheel bearing lubricant, GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037), or an equivalent
lubricant.
2. Install the sliding pins and the boots.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
3. Install the bleeder valve (5) to the caliper.
Tighten
Tighten the bleeder valve to 8.3 N.m (73.46 lb in).
4. Install the bleeder valve cap (4).
5. Lubricate the following components with Delco Supreme 11 brake fluid, GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), or an equivalent DOT 3
brake fluid:

The caliper bore
^
A NEW piston seal (14)
^
The piston (13)
^
A NEW piston boot (12) A NEW set ring (11)
6. Install the piston seal into the caliper bore. Verify the seal is not twisted.
7. Install the piston into the caliper bore.
8. Install the piston boot over the piston.
9. Install the set ring.
10. Install the caliper to the vehicle. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Rear.
