Brake Caliper Overhaul - Front
Disassembly Procedure
1. Remove the caliper (1) from the vehicle. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement - Front. See: Brake Caliper Replacement- Front
2. Remove the caliper set ring (3).
3. Remove the piston boot (2).
Caution: Do not place your fingers in front of the piston in order to catch or protect the piston while applying compressed air. This could
result in serious injury.
Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.
Notice: Use just enough air pressure to ease the piston out of the bore. You can damage a blown-out piston even with the padding.
4. Insert a shop cloth (2) into the caliper in order to catch the piston.
5. Apply compressed air to the caliper brake hose connector hole in order to remove the piston from the caliper.
6. Remove the piston seal.
7. Remove the bleeder valve cap (13).
8. Remove the bleeder valve (12).
Important: DO NOT use abrasives in order to clean the caliper components.
9. Clean the following components in denatured alcohol or an equivalent brake parts cleaner:

The caliper set ring

The piston
^
The caliper bracket
^
The caliper housing
10. Dry the components using Unlubricated, compressed air.
11. Blow out all passages in the caliper housing and the bleeder valve.
Inspection Procedure
1. Inspect the guide surfaces of the caliper bracket (14) for corrosion and wear. Replace the bracket if the bracket is damaged. Refer to Brake Caliper

2. Inspect the following components for damage, wear or corrosion:

The caliper housing (10)

The caliper bracket
^
The piston (8)
^
The piston seal (9)
^
The piston boot (7)
^
The caliper set ring (6)
3. Replace the components if damage, wear or corrosion is evident.
4. Inspect the caliper bore for cracks, scoring, pitting, or corrosion. Replace the caliper if the bore is damaged.
