Valve Clearance: Adjustments

Valve Clearance Adjustment

Valve Clearance Inspection

1. Remove the engine under right cover.
2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement   (See: Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Engine Cover Replacement).
3. Remove the ignition coil assembly. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement   (See: Powertrain Management/Ignition System/Ignition Coil/Service and

Repair).

4. Remove the spark plug. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement   (See: Tune-up and Engine Performance Checks/Spark Plug/Service and Repair).
5. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement   (See: Valve Cover/Service and Repair).

6. Set No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression.
7. Check only the valves indicated.

Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft.

Record any out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement valve clearance
lifters.

8. Turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and set the No. 4 cylinder to TDC/compression.
