J 1859-A - Steering Wheel Puller
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution (See: Service Precautions/Steering Column in Lock Position Caution).
1. LOCK the steering column and verify the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (See: Starting and
Charging/Battery/Battery Cable/Service and Repair).
3. Remove the steering wheel module. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement (See: Restraint Systems/Air Bag
Systems/Air Bag/Service and Repair).
4. Remove the steering wheel nut.
5. Put match marks (1) on the steering wheel assembly and on the steering main shaft.
6. Disconnect the connectors from the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) coil.
Caution: When removing the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Do not hammer on the end of the steering column shaft.
Hammering could loosen the plastic injections which maintain the steering column rigidity.
7. Use the J 1859-A - puller in order to remove steering wheel.
8. If the vehicle has audio controls on the steering wheel, remove the steering wheel control switch assembly. Refer to Steering Wheel Control
