Eliminating Symptoms - Engine: Re-programming DME Control Unit (Vehicle Jerking/Misfires During Acceleration)

Symptom

Vehicle jerking during acceleration; driver finds that vehicle is low on power.

Cause

Mixture becomes lean for a short time in combination with valve lift deactivation during highly dynamic drive-off manoeuvres.

Remedial action

If a complaint is received, re-program the DME control unit using a modified data record.

Tools and materials

PIWIS Tester 9718 with test software version 22.000 (or higher) installed

Programming DME control unit

CAUTION:
A fault is entered in the fault memory and control unit programming is aborted due to undervoltage.

Increased current draw during diagnosis or control unit programming can cause a drop in voltage, which can result in one or more fault
entries and the abnormal termination of the programming process.

Before commencing work, connect a suitable battery charger with a current rating of at least 40 A to the jump-start terminals in the engine
compartment.

INFORMATION:  The procedure described here is based on test software version 22.000.

The PIWIS Tester instructions take precedence and in the event of a discrepancy, these are the instructions that must be followed.

A discrepancy may arise with later software versions for example.

1. PIWIS Tester 9718 with installed test software version 22.000 (or higher) must be connected to the vehicle before switching on the System Tester.

Switch on the ignition and press >> to continue.

2. Call up the "Diagnosis" menu and select vehicle type - 997. Press >> to continue.
3. Select - DME control unit in the "Control units" menu and confirm by pressing >>.
4. Select - Control unit programming in the "997 function selection" menu and confirm by pressing >>.
5. Select - "Program control unit" in the "997 control unit programming" menu and confirm by pressing >>.
6. Read and follow the programming instructions on the PIWIS Tester. Press >> to continue.
7. Select the vehicle type and confirm by pressing >>.
8. Select transmission type - "Tiptronic" and confirm by pressing >>.
9. Select model year - "As of MY 05" and confirm by pressing >>.

10. Exhaust standard must be selected. Confirm your selection by pressing >>.
