Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair

Removing and installing hydraulic pump (power-steering pump)

Removing and installing is performed with the engine installed. Applies to Tiptronic and manual transmission. Includes: Removing and installing air
filter system and pressure pipe (Y-pipe). Figure shows the manual transmission version.

Preliminary work for removing hydraulic pump

1. Open engine compartment lid. Install protective supports. Switch off ignition.

2. Remove complete air filter system.

3. Remove -pressure pipe (Y-pipe)-.

To do so, undo the hose clamps -3 and 5- and the hexagon-head bolts -1 and 2-. Pull off pressure sensor plug -4-. Pull off the connecting hoses
between the charge air coolers and the Y-shaped pressure pipe. To do this, unclip the retaining clips using a screwdriver and pull out the hose.
Refit the retaining clips immediately. Loosen the remaining hoses and lines on the pressure pipe (Y-pipe).

4. Relieve drive belt (do not remove) and take off from the belt pulley of the hydraulic pump. Then remove the pulley (3 screws).

Removing hydraulic pump (engine installed)

1. For manual transmission vehicles actuate the clutch pedal at least 25 times so that the system is depressurized.
2. Remove Pentosin from reservoir using suction. If the reservoir is to be replaced, remove the closure cap, punch through the strainer and apply

suction to the filler opening. If the reservoir is to be used again - with a shop-made device - apply suction to the return connection of the clutch
booster circuit or steering at the reservoir (see following text).

Shop-made device: Remove original return line (for clutch booster circuit or steering). Shorten this line and connect to a suction pump.

Suction draining procedure: Connect the shop-made device instead of the original return line to the upper part of the reservoir and drain the
Pentosin using suction. Return line of steering or clutch booster circuit, see Step 3 and Step 4.
