The slots for adjusting caster eccentrics in the front axle ball and socket joints of new cars are now closed with an elastic sealing compound. This
prevents the entry of dirt which could make adjusting difficult.
Note
Sealing of the slots began in production as of VIN 92 DS 86 0075 (Sept., 1982)
Sealing procedure (all cars)
After front-axle repairs and/or wheel alignment, close the slots (arrows) with a permanently elastic sealing compound, such as the sealing cord, Part No.
AKD 522 009, used to seal the tail lights of 924 and 944 vehicles.
Note
The edge surfaces of the slots must be dry and cleaned of grease before applying sealing compound.
^
If the adjusting eccentric is hard to turn (dirt in slot), remove the caster eccentric, clean and spray the slot with a corrosion remover, and
reinstall the eccentric.
CAUTION
Under no circumstances may adjustments be made by applying hammer blows to the ball and socket joints. This could cause damage to the rubber
caps.
If a damaged rubber cap is found on a ball and socket joint, the joint must be replaced as prescribed in the Workshop Manual.
