Idle Speed: Adjustments
Idle Speed and Fuel Mixture

Idle speed and CO% are electronically controlled. This procedure is for setting the basic idle speed and CO% reference points only.

Note: All checks and adjustment must be made with engine at operating temperature and accessories turned off.

Idle Checks 

1. Connect CO meter to sample ahead of the catalytic converter.
2. Connect tachometer.
3. Start engine and allow idle to stabilize.

Idle speed 

840 ± 40 RPM 

Idle mixture 

0.6 ± 0.3 % CO 

If not to specifications, proceed to adjustment.

Idle Adjustments 

1. Drill and remove CO access plug from the air flow sensor , as necesary. It may be necesary to remove the air flow sensor to remove the plug. See:

2. Connect tachometer and CO meter to sample ahead of the catalytic converter.
3. Start engine and allow idle to stabilize.
4. Disconnect oxygen sensor lead and allow mixture to stabilize.
5. Check and adjust Idle CO%

0.6 ± 0.2% CO at 840 ± 40 RPM

6. Reconnect the oxygen sensor.

Test Jack Pin Identification

7. Using a test wire or test relay, special Tool # 9246, jump test plug (mounted to inner fender) terminals B and C.
8. Adjust idle speed using throttle body air bypass screw.

9. Remove jumper wire and recheck specifications.
