Brake Pad: Service and Repair

If brake pads are serviceable, pads must be marked for installation in original position.

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove retaining pin spring locks, if equipped.
3. Drive out brake paid retaining pins with suitable hammer and drift.
4. Pull brake pad wear indicator warning contact out of pad plate, if equipped.
5. Remove inboard brake pad with tool P86, or equivalent, Fig. 1.
6. Using a suitable screwdriver, pry floating frame to full outboard position and remove outboard brake pad. Outboard brake pad is guided by a

tab on the floating caliper frame, Fig. 3.

7. Replace oil contaminated, cracked or loose pads.
8. Press caliper pistons back into position. Ensure brake fluid reservoir does not overflow during step 8 by siphoning off any excess.
9. Clean pad seats and sliding surfaces in caliper. Do not use cleaning fluids containing mineral oils.

10. Check that caliper piston is positioned at 20°, if necessary adjust with special pliers. When using a piston gauge, hold gauge at bottom guide

surface of front caliper and top of rear brake caliper, Fig. 4.

11. Install outboard brake pad and press floating caliper frame toward brake disc so pin engages in groove of pad backplate.
12. Install inboard brake pad.
13. Install retaining pins and cross spring.
14. Press brake pad wear indicator warning contact into inner pad backplate, if equipped.
15. Install retaining pin spring locks, if equipped. Before moving vehicle, depress brake pedal several times to properly position caliper piston.
