Noise From the Steering Column

Concern: 
A crackling noise may be heard from the area of the steering column while performing steering maneuvers such as parking.

General Information: 
The area of the upper steering column bearing mounting was modified to reduce the axial play (push pull) in the steering shaft. Effective in production,
since March 15, 1994 from the following VIN's:

96 6 SS820112
96 4 SS840108

Work Procedure:

Should there be a customer complaint of noise from the steering column, use the following procedures for checking the cause of the noise.

With the vehicle at a standstill and not running, move the steering wheel back and forth (push and pull). If a crackling noise can be heard or if there is
excessive play, repair the steering column by installing the parts on the steering shaft as shown in Figure 1.

If no play is present, yet the noise still exists, the noise may be caused by a binding lower steering shaft. To check this, have the vehicle at a standstill
and the engine switched off. Turn the steering wheel to full stop right, then full stop left. If a crackling noise is heard, proceed as follows:

To eliminate this binding of the lower steering shaft, loosen the fastening bolts of both universal joints and move the steering wheel to full stop left then
full stop right. Bring the steering wheel back to the center position and tighten the fastening bolts to 30 Nm + 5 Nm using new nuts, part number 900 910
022 09.
