Subject:
Camshaft Basic Setting
ATTENTION: Service Manager/Service Technician
Models Affected:
968
Concern:
In some early production engines, it is possible that the camshaft chain drive gears are not indexed with casting
tabs or paint dots.
Work Procedure:
To be certain the camshafts are installed correctly in the timing chain (basic setting), proceed as follows:
Camshafts with casting tabs or paint dots
The timing chain of the 968 has two dark blue colored links on one side. During assembly, the paint markings or
casting tabs of the camshafts must be lined up with the dark blue chain links. The number of links from the
intake camshaft marking to the exhaust camshaft marking is seven (7). The casting tabs are located in front of
the drive gears (driving direction).
Camshafts without casting tabs or paint dots
The cam lobes of cylinder # 1 intake and exhaust camshafts must face each other at an angle of 45~ (Figure 1).
The dark blue chain links must be positioned at the upper center of the chain gears. If a camshaft is one tooth
off, the fine valve timing adjustment value cannot be reached.
Checking camshaft timing is described in the 968 Workshop Manual, Volume 1, pages 15-4 through 15-6.
