Boxster (986) F6-2.5L (1998)
Starter Motor: Description and Operation
The Boxster has an inertia gear drive starter with countershaft gear, permanent energization, and freely protruding pinion.
Output 1.2 kW.
Vehicles with a Tiptronic transmission have the 1.8 kW variant.
The starter with its freely protruding pinion is used for construction reasons. As a result, there is no bearing at the end of the pinion shaft. Instead, the
complete hearing is inside the starter motor. To reduce noise and load (contact brushes, free wheel, service life), an automatic starter ejector has been
installed.
Function
The DME control unit stops operation of the start inhibit relay and thus also operation of the magnetic switch at the starter via term. 50. The starter
disengages.
Effect
When the engine is started, the speed of the engine becomes faster than that of the still engaged starter. The time taken for the engine speed to exceed the
starter speed is considerably shorter compared to a manual start. This feature means that the starting behavior is more spontaneous. A possible second
start is performed manually
Interruption of the start inhibit relay occurs when the following engine speeds are reached:
600 rpm at an engine temperature of 12 °C
1,000 rpm at an engine temperature of 12 °C
