Timing Cover: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove support rod and spacer, drain engine oil and remove oil pan.
3.
Remove accessory drive belts and the water pump pulley and hub.
4.
On vehicles equipped with A/C, place suitable jack under engine cradle and remove the two bolts on right hand side, then lower jack until pulley
clears side member.
5.
On all models, remove crankshaft pulley and timing case cover.
6.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Using Permatex Form-A-Gasket 6 or equivalent, apply a bead of approximately 1/4 inch diameter along sealing surfaces of oil pan and timing
cover, applying a double bead at four corners of oil pan.
b. Using Permatex Form-A-Gasket 6 or equivalent, apply a bead on the outside of the No. 1 main bearing cap, adjacent to flange.
c. Ensure that timing cover is properly positioned on locating dowels.
d. Use tool Mot. 964 or equivalent to install pulley oil seal.
e. On vehicles equipped with A/C, torque 10 mm cradle bolts to 30 ft.lbs. and 12 mm cradle bolts to 70 ft.lbs.
