Water Pump: Service and Repair

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Drain cooling system at cylinder block draincock and either radiator draincock or lower radiator hose.

3.

Disconnect hoses from water pump.

4.

Remove water pump belt and alternator bracket.

5.

Remove water pump attaching bolts, then remove pump, tapping as necessary with suitable hammer.

6.

Clean gasket mating surfaces.

7.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following: 

a. Ensure thermostat ball check valve is installed in upward direction so air can vent when filling system.
b. Adjust drive belt to obtain 1.4-1.7 inches deflection when 90-115 lbs. force is applied to the run between the crankshaft pulley and alternator.
c. Refill and bleed cooling system as outlined.
