Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair

REMOVE

1.

Raise and support front of vehicle, allowing wheels to hang free, then remove wheel.

2.

Remove caliper and secure aside, taking care not to stretch brake hose.

3.

Hold hub with suitable bar, then remove nut from end of drive axle.

4.

Remove machine screws or stamped nuts, if equipped, then remove brake rotor from hub.

5.

Remove hub assembly with slide type puller, ensuring puller is installed directly in line with center line of hub.

CAUTION: Use of any type puller which attaches to the outer rim of the hub and is offset from center line may damage hub and/or bearings.

6.

Remove bearing sleeve from hub using suitable puller.

7.

Remove bolts securing strut to steering knuckle and remove ball joint pinch bolt.

8.

Press drive axle inward and remove steering knuckle, then secure axle to prevent it from falling.

NOTE: Do not allow axle to slip out of transaxle, and do not stress CV joints.

9.

Remove bearing snap ring from steering knuckle, drive bearing inner race and rollers from knuckle using suitable drift, then remove bearing outer
race using inner race as a driver.

10.

Clean and inspect hub and knuckle bearing surfaced, and replace as needed.

REFIT

1.

Press new bearing into knuckle using 2.5 inch diameter spacer, ensuring bearing is seated in knuckle.

NOTE: Apply press force to bearing outer race only. Bearing will be damaged if force is applied to inner race.

2.

Install bearing snap ring in steering knuckle and press new bearing sleeve onto hub.

3.

Lubricate bearing seal lips, then install hub in steering knuckle.

4.

Guide drive axle through steering knuckle and hub, mount knuckle on ball joint, then install pinch bolt and strut retaining bolts and torque strut
bolts to 55 ft.lbs. and pinch bolt to 40 ft.lbs.

5.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, and torque drive axle nut to 154 ft.lbs.
