Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Axial Ball Joint Assembly, Replace
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
2.
Disconnect tie rod using tool No. AV 476 or equivalent.

Loosen locknut (E) by holding the axial ball joint with a suitable wrench at nut (P), Fig. 8.
4.
Unscrew ball joint housing while counting number of turns in order to reset toe-out during assembly.
5.
Turn steering wheel to the right, then remove rack bellows.

6.
Install tool No. Dir 811 over both sides of rack teeth, then remove axial ball joint and washers using tool No. DIR 812, Fig. 9. Axial ball joint
assemblies cannot be reused after removal.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Coat axial ball joint with Loctite Frenbloc or equivalent.
b. Align two tabs of the safety lockwasher with flat spot on rack.
c. Torque tie rod locknut to 26 ft.lbs.
d. Torque axial ball joint and tie rod end nut to 30 ft.lbs.
