FLUSHING OIL COOLER AND COOLER LINES
Information
When overhauling the transaxle to correct a malfunction that generated sludge or heavy accumulations of metal particles or clutch friction material, the
oil cooler and cooler lines must be flushed thoroughly and the torque converter replaced. Do not attempt to clean or flush the torque converter.
The oil cooler and cooler lines must be flushed using mineral spirits, transmission fluid, and compressed air as follows.
Procedure
1.
Disconnect lower (inlet) cooler line from radiator fitting. Remove any sludge or particles from fitting with a small screwdriver and reconnect line
to fitting.
2.
Disconnect both cooler line hoses from transaxle fittings A and B (see illustration). Tag hoses for installation reference. Fitting A is transaxle fluid
outlet and fitting B is transaxle fluid inlet.
3.
Secure end of cooler line hose attached to transaxle inlet fitting B in waste container.
4.
Flush cooler as follows:
a.
Pump approximately 0.47 liters (1-pint) of mineral spirits into radiator oil cooler through hose attached to radiator cooler inlet line (this is
line connected to radiator cooler lower fitting).
b.
Insert compressed air nozzle into cooler inlet line hose and apply short bursts of compressed air to force solvent through cooler and lines.
c.
Repeat steps A and B until solvent coming out of cooler hose secured in waste container is clear.
d.
Pump approximately 0.47 liters (1-pint) of new automatic transmission fluid into cooler and lines through cooler inlet hose.
e.
Insert compressed air nozzle into hose attached to cooler inlet line hose and apply short bursts of compressed air to force transmission fluid
through cooler and lines. Continue pumping transmission fluid through cooler and lines until all solvent and any residual foreign material are
purged from cooler and lines.
f.
Remove transaxle cooler line fittings A and B (see illustration). Blow out both fittings and orifice C with compressed air, lubricate the fitting
passages and threads with automatic transmission fluid and reinstall them.
5.
Check transmission fluid flow rate through cooler as follows:
