Radiator Cooling Fan Temperature Sensor / Switch: Testing and Inspection
THERMAL SWITCH TESTING
On models equipped with man. trans. less A/C, the thermal switch is located on the driver's side radiator side tank. On models equipped with
auto. trans. and all models with A/C, the thermal switch is located on the passenger side of radiator side tank.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove thermal switch from radiator side tank.
3.
With switch cold, connect test lamp between battery positive terminal and one terminal of switch. Connect other switch terminal to battery ground.
4.
The test lamp should be off.
5.
Immerse bottom of switch in suitable container of water, then heat water.

On vehicles equipped with man. trans less A/C, the contacts should close within 5 minutes after water temperature reaches 212-222° F, lighting the
test lamp. On vehicles equipped with auto. trans. and all models equipped with A/C, the contacts should close within 5 minutes after water
temperature reaches 185-195° F., lighting the test lamp.
7.
Add cold water to heated water and stir. On vehicles equipped with man. trans. less A/C, the contacts should open when water temperature drops
to 201° F, shutting off the test lamp. On vehicles equipped with auto. trans. and all models equipped with A/C, the contacts should open when
water temperature drops to 170° F., shutting off the test lamp.
8.
Replace switch as necessary. During installation, torque to 30 ft.lbs.
