Radiator Cooling Fan Temperature Sensor / Switch: Testing and Inspection
FAN MOTOR, REPLACE
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove radiator grille.
3.
Remove upper crossmember, then disconnect the junction block.
4.
Loosen radiator supports. Do not remove radiator hoses.
5.
Remove fan motor bracket to radiator frame attaching nuts, then the fan motor and bracket assembly.
6.
Remove fan blade by removing blade nut. Turn blade nut clockwise to remove.
7.
Remove fan blade, then the motor from support.
8.
Reverse procedure to install. After installation is complete, adjust hook safety catch.
THERMAL SWITCH TESTING
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove thermal switch from bottom of radiator.
3.
With switch cold, connect test lamp between battery positive terminal and one terminal of switch. Connect other switch terminal to battery ground.
4.
The test lamp should be off.
5.
Immerse bottom of switch in suitable container of water, then heat water.
6.
On Fuego and Fuego Turbo vehicles, the contacts should close within 5 minutes after water temperature reaches 190° F, lighting the test lamp. On
18i and Sportwagon vehicles, the contacts should close within 5 minutes after water temperature reaches 185-195° F., lighting the test lamp.
7.
Add cold water to heated water and stir. On Fuego and Fuego Turbo vehicles, the contacts should open when water temperature drops to 174° F.,
shutting off the test lamp. On 18i and Sportwagon vehicles, the contacts should open when water temperature drops to 170° F., shutting off the test
lamp.
8.
Replace switch as necessary. During installation, torque to 30 ft.lbs.
