Alignment: Service and Repair
Toe-Out Adjustment

FRONT

1.

Ensure that steering gear is centered as outlined in ``Preliminary Checks,'' and that steering wheel is in the straight ahead position.

2.

Using a suitable tool, lock steering wheel in the straight ahead position.

3.

Measure total toe-out and distribution over two wheels, either in relation to the rear wheel assembly or in relation to the body sill.

4.

If toe-out setting is not within specifications, adjust as follows: 

a. Hold tie rod on flat with suitable adjusting wrench and loosen tie rod end locknut.
b. Turn tie rod to obtain the specified toe-out at each wheel. One full turn of the steering arm or end fitting alters toe setting by approximately

.125 inch (3 mm). Toe out should be adjusted to the same value for right and left sides.

c. Hold position of tie rod and torque locknut to 26 ft.lbs. on Fuego and Sportwagon. On Alliance, Encore and GTA, torque locknut to 30 ft.lbs.

on models with manual steering or 40 ft.lbs. on models with power steering. Proper tightening of tie rod end locknut is essential to
prevent dirt or water from entering tie rod.

REAR

Rear toe should be checked with vehicle unloaded and ride height adjusted to specifications as outlined. Total toe should be within specifications, and
toe for left and right wheels should be equal.     Rear toe is not adjustable. If settings are not within specifications, check for damaged, distorted, or worn
suspension components and damaged sheet metal, and correct as needed.
