Axle Beam: Service and Repair
Rear Axle Assembly, Replace
1.
Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2.
Remove wheels.
3.
Remove shock absorber lower mountings and compress shock absorbers upward.
4.
Remove flexible brake lines from limiter.
5.
Pull rear axle downward and remove springs.
6.
Remove two side arm nuts on chassis side, then remove two bolts.
7.
Disconnect parking brake cables at adjuster and remove them from retaining bracket.
8.
Place suitable jack under rear axle shaft.
9.
Disconnect brake limiter valve.
10.
Remove two center arm bolts.
11.
Remove rear axle assembly.
12.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque center arm bolts to 59 ft.lbs., side arm bolts to 26-30 ft.lbs., and wheel lug nuts to 59 ft.lbs.
13.
Bleed rear brake circuit.
14.
Check adjustment of brake limiter valve and parking brake.
Center Arm, Replace
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Disconnect brake limiter control rod.

3.
Unscrew nuts (2) and (3) of clamp (4), Fig. 4.
4.
Unscrew nuts (5) and (6) on left and right bolts.
5.
Remove clamp and two bolts.
6.
Remove center arm.
7.
Using suitable lubricant, lubricate two bolts.
8.
Position arm on chassis, then insert bolts.
9.
Install nuts (5) and (6) and hand tighten.
10.
Install rubber bushing clamp (4) and slowly screw nuts (2) and (3) on alternately to avoid pinching rubber bushing.
11.
With rear suspension properly aligned, torque bolt nuts to 51-67 ft.lbs. and center bushing clamp nuts to 9-13 ft.lbs.
12.
Check adjustment of limiter valve.
Side Arms, Replace
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Disconnect two parking brake cables.
3.
Remove side arm attaching nuts, then drive out bolts.
4.
Remove side arms/stabilizer bar assembly.
5.
Reverse procedure to install, torquing bolts on chassis side to 22-30 ft.lbs. and bolts on rear axle shaft to 22-38 ft.lbs.
Rear Axle Shaft, Replace
1.
Raise and support rear of vehicle.
2.
Remove rear wheels.
3.
Disconnect shock absorbers at bottom and compress them upward.
4.
Remove brake drum and detach parking brake cable from brake shoe, then disengage it from backing plate.
5.
Remove side arm bolt nut, then remove bolt.
6.
Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder and detach it from rear axle shaft.
7.
Remove brake lines.
